Home to nearly 1,000 creatures across 119 species and one of the city’s favourite family destinations. A not-for-profit society founded in 1929, the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is one of just five zoos in Canada accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
Why Go
The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is home to nearly 1,000 creatures across 119 species and is one of the city’s favourite family destinations. Travel to the polar waters of Penguin Plunge. Hike up through Wild Canada to find big horn sheep, caribou, polar bear, otters, grizzlies, cougars, moose and many more animals who call Canada home. Safari through the Savannah to see hippos, giraffes, meerkats, lions and lemurs roaming. Trek to the Rainforest as you visit the chameleons, crocodiles and gorillas. Meander through the tranquility and serenity of the ornamental Dorothy Harvie Gardens and ENMAX Conservatory. Venture East through the forests and mountains of Asia to meet some of the world's most endangered species including the Malayan taipur and white-handed gibbons. Be sure not to miss the majestic Amur tigers, snow leopards, and Komodo dragons while you're there. Then head back in time through Prehistoric Park.
What's Great
A not-for-profit society founded in 1929, the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is one of just five zoos in Canada accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Their mission is to become Canada’s leader in wildlife conservation. To that aim, they operate a Centre for Conservation Research where biologists have earned international recognition in the science of species recovery and reintroduction.
Local Tip:
Don’t skip the cold months! From January through March, the king penguins waddle their way through the zoo for a daily Penguin Walk (weather depending).
