Why Go
The Military Museums is the second largest military museum in Canada. This multi-faceted attraction houses four regimental museums, three branch-specific museums, an art gallery, and The Military Museums Library and Archives. The Military Museums has an incredible collection of artefacts and stories spanning Canada's military history from the late 1800s through the World Wars to Afghanistan. The Military Museums also features the Cold War Exhibit comprised of two hangars, which house a CF-18 Hornet, a CF-104 Starfighter, and a F-86 Sabre Jet fighter, paying tribute to the Canadians who stood ready to defend Canada throughout the Cold War. Visitors can easily spend a day or two taking in the wide variety of exhibits. The Military Museums is dedicated to representing Canada's navy, army, and air force and educating the public, particularly youth, about Canada's military. The museum is a short drive south of downtown. Visitors can take Crowchild Trail to Flanders Avenue and head east. Turn right onto Amiens Road and follow the signs.
What's Great
From authentic armoured vehicles and fighter planes, the history of the regimental galleries, or the rotating contemporary art and heritage exhibitions of the Founders’ Gallery, the size and scope of The Military Museums has it made one of Calgary’s top attractions. The size of the Military Museums means you should plan at least a half day to quickly see the highlights of the facility, but you should plan for a full day to truly experience all the interactive exhibits they offer. This is also a great place for grandchildren to spend a day with their grandparents.
