Canada's first professional outdoor summer opera festival.

Calgary Opera's second annual outdoor summer festival - Opera in the Village will build on last year's successful launch of Canada's only outdoor summer opera festival.

2014’s summer festival will be bigger with two productions and taking place in the big top tent over two weekends in August. It will add a boisterous circus atmosphere on the Plaza.

The centrepiece of Opera in the Village 2014 is Leonard Bernstein’s comic masterpiece Candide in the 900-seat big top tent. Candide is a timeless masterpiece and will feature a sensational score, sparkling lyrics and an all-star Canadian cast, accompanied by a live orchestra.

In addition to Candide Calgary Opera will be presenting family matinees of an hour-long adaptation of Hansel & Gretel.  This lively and colourful production features alumni from Calgary Opera's Emerging Artist Development Program accompanied by piano in the big top tent.

The festival site will be infused with a carnival atmosphere and filled with outdoor activities including roving performers. Over the two weeks expect a colourful array of stilt walkers, jugglers, magicians, fire performers and more.

Opera in the Village will also include outdoor recitals, singing contests, movie nights, the Big Rock Big Top Beer Garden, some of Calgary’s best food trucks and more.
