Take a short drive to the scenic Calgary foothills and discover a sweet experience - shopping, learning and tasting - all wrapped up in a sustainable Alberta honey farm.
Chinook Honey Company’s attentive staff will happily show you all the site has to offer. There is a honey bee interpretive area where you can watch as worker bees bustle with activity in the glass observation hive. Also learn about the amazing organization of the bee colony, how they create delectable honey, raise their brood and how beekeepers manage their fragile charges.
Tantalize your taste buds with a variety of honeys and the many gourmet honey-made products, such as Saskatoon Honey Jam, Mead Jelly and Dulce de Leche (honey caramel) ice cream.
Also on site is Alberta’s very first Meadery (honey winery). Try their award winning meads before purchasing your favourite ‘nectar of the gods’. You may even enjoy your mead with your own picnic lunch at outdoor tables, while taking in the majestic mountain view.
The ‘honey boutique’ also carries a wide range of beeswax candles, honey body care products and apitherapy (the medicinal use of hive products) items. Gift baskets are available year round and can be custom made to include any honey gourmet item your friends and family could possibly desire.
The annual Harvest Event, which takes place in late August, is a fun filled day of activities for young and old, all in appreciation of the bees and the harvest of liquid gold they provide. In early December, Chinook Honey Company puts on ‘Christmas at the Hive’, a fundraiser for placing beehives in under-developed countries. Activities include making beeswax snow candles, demonstrations, tours and a visit with Santa’s reindeer.
Chinook Honey Company is open year round and group tours are available anytime, though the months from May until October are best for honey bee watching. Individual tours can be booked from May to October.
